Many traditional legal services models are under strain. Smaller firms, in particular, are facing structural challenges as clients consolidate toward larger providers and talent becomes harder to attract and retain. These pressures are creating growing divergence in performance across the market.

While disruption is often discussed, change in people-led businesses is rarely straightforward. Partnership structures, siloed ways of working, and limited data can make it difficult to build momentum for transformation, especially when traditional billing models continue to deliver strong earnings. Those able to navigate this complexity can create something differentiated and durable.

There is no single formula for success. Different models are gaining traction, from buy & build and deep sector specialism to vertical integration and more progressive approaches to employee value propositions. Each reflects a market experimenting with new ways to compete and grow.
